Shade Sail Small: A small square of shade over a table or a corner of a deck.
1 · The item
A plain double-row stitched seam with no tape, the needle perforations visible as a line of small open holes.
2 · Seam and vents

Stitched, not taped. Every needle hole is an opening, and this is where water arrives first.

A circular mesh vent set into marine canvas, with a brass rim, a fine mesh screen and a storm flap stitched above it.
3 · The vent

Mesh vent with a storm flap. Air leaves, rain does not come straight in.

Cross-section through the coated fabric. Water stops at the coating. It does not stop at a needle hole, which is why the seam treatment above matters as much as the number below.

This is a cover. It is not safety equipment, and it will not hold a boat in place. Check your mooring and your straps separately.

Measure before you order. A cover that is too tight tears at the corners, and one that is too loose flogs in the wind and wears itself out. How to measure.

Everything we know about this item

The figures, and where each one stops being true.

Water column

Not measured

Not measured, because shade fabric is knitted and open. Water goes straight through it. This is a sun shade, not a rain cover, and a shade sail left up to shed rain will pool and pull its corners out.

Seam treatment

Stitched

Stitched with UV-stable thread and bound at the perimeter. The corners carry all the load; that is where a shade sail fails.

Vents and condensation

Vented

Knitted and open, so nothing is trapped underneath. There is no condensation issue with this product.

Fastening and wind

Tie points

Tension it evenly at all corners. Take it down before a windy spell: a tensioned sail transfers a large load into whatever it is tied to, and that is usually what gives way first.

Care

Do not machine wash

Hose it down. Do not machine wash; the knit distorts.

UV test

Not tested

Not tested. This fabric blocks roughly 90% of visible light by construction, but we have no EN 13758-2 or AS/NZS 4399 report for it, so we do not print a UPF number. Blocking light and blocking UV are not the same thing.
